The next big thing.
With so many promises of hope wrapped up in the irresistibly seductive allure of something new and exciting by the beauty industry, it’s little wonder we struggle to be patient. We’re left wondering what the next best thing in skincare is? What’s everyone raving about in skincare and beauty this year? Could the latest super ingredient change your skin for the better? Will it even work at all?
Sure, many new and exciting discoveries are being developed into elegant and sophisticated formulas by the beauty and skincare industry. Still, none of it’s going to make much of a difference unless you commit. Yep, I’ll repeat that. Good skin means you need to invest and commit.
Allow your skincare of choice the time it takes to work for you. I’m not talking a few weeks or even a month. It’s time to take a longer view.
This is a lifetime proposition.
Once you’ve found a product that suits your skin, stick with it. After all, an occasional skincare routine isn’t a routine at all.
Of course, you may want to change your brand from time to time. Perhaps you found something new, and you couldn’t resist. The cool and sophisticated packaging or the addictive scent; which is all fine as long as it’s backed up with more than clever marketing. But, wait. Always look for the science behind your choices.
Or maybe, your skincare professional has advised you on a brand they believe to be far better suited to your skin. Great, make the change if you need to. But, if it’s real results you’re after, then you’re going to do more than just change up your brand. Every investment requires you to commit.
You invested your money in a skincare routine; now invest your time. Make it count for you. Get the basics right. Just do it! Stay the course.
Commitment Number 1: Cleanse gently and religiously.
A mild cleanser that doesn’t strip the precious oils from your skin will be one of the most important things you can do for your skin. But, of course, you must do it every day and specifically every night. If you want great skin, do not skip your cleansing routine.
Don’t allow the remnants of the day to remain on your skin overnight. Remove every trace of your makeup, including any stubborn eye makeup. Cleanse away the grime accumulated from the day. You’d be surprised to find how much gunk, grime and pollution land on your skin. Leaving your skin in a state of stress and launching runaway free radicals to damage your skin unnecessarily.
Commitment Number 2: Exfoliate with an alpha hydroxy acid serum.
When you exfoliate properly and regularly, it shows in your skin. The most really effective exfoliating products are either liquid-based serum or a non-setting mask, or mini-peel treatment. Depending on the type of exfoliating product your choose, you’ll need to include this in your routine either daily or weekly. Your skincare professional can advise you on how often.
Invest in your skincare regimen. It doesn’t have to be the most expensive to be the best for you.
Commitment Number 3: Include Vitamins A, C, E and B3 in your daily skincare routine.
When applied as part of a regular skincare routine, Vitamins not only create an antioxidant network but assist in protecting your skin from the heat of the sun and environmental stressors.
Commitment Number 4: Find a good moisturiser.
One that leaves your skin feeling comfortable. Again, if you don’t want to spend the best part of a weeks wage on skincare, then choose a moisturiser that feels good. The comfort you get from a well-formulated moisturiser used every day will provide you with the benefit of preventing something called Trans Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL) and will keep the surface of your skin hydrated all day.
Commitment Number 5: Choose your sun protection wisely.
The best you can afford. Choose a sunscreen you actually like wearing, then do so—every day. While you’re checking the SPF, be sure to check if it’s broad spectrum. This is the gold standard and will block out both UVB and UVA radiation.
Have you committed yet?
So, before you jump at the next super brand or big promise in a jar, think about how much time you’ve given your current routine? Have you followed the steps as your skincare professional advised you? Did you wish for an instant result and then chucked it all in before it had time to work? Perhaps not? I know. We all want a quick fix. We all want our skincare problems solved instantly. But, truly, if there’s one thing, I know for sure. Taking the long view will be the best thing you ever did.
