Let’s take a closer look at anti-ageing for your neck and décolletage.
The ageing skin of the neck and décolletage (the chest area) can present us with specific challenges.
Firstly, the skin of the neck has very little connective tissue, which means it can show signs of ageing well before the face. Secondly, the décolletage area is often unwittingly exposed to the sun leading to a blotchy, pigmented, uneven texture that can appear all at once and, for many of us, quite troubling.
The good news? There are amazing non-surgical tech devices available in professional skin clinics that can help.
You’ll find non-surgical clinical devices for the ageing neck and décolletage within professional skin clinics. These treatments are carried out by qualified dermal therapists, registered nurses, or cosmetic doctors.
While many devices can rejuvenate, firm and tighten the skin of the neck and décolletage, I’ve chosen three specifically because combined in one or a series of treatments can provide optimal results.
→ Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) for rejuvenating sun-damaged skin.
→ High-intensity focussed ultrasound (HIFU) for skin tightening
→ LED Light Therapy improves cellular energy to activate the processes within the skin to slow down visible ageing.
#1 Rejuvenating your neck and décolletage with Intense Pulsed Light Treatment (IPL).
IPL machines can treat various skin conditions, but I’d like to focus on photo rejuvenation for the neck and décolletage.
What photo-rejuvenation?
Photo-rejuvenation is a term used to describe the rejuvenation of skin that has been exposed to UV sunlight for years and shows visible signs of sun damage.
On the neck and décolletage, sun damage can appear as mottled and uneven texture, redness, broken capillaries, and blotchy pigmented skin with premature lines and wrinkles.
Even though it can take many years to show up, once it does, it can feel like a sudden onset of skin conditions you’d rather not see when you look in the mirror.
What is Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)?
IPL is a non-invasive light-based technology utilising selective photothermolysis (Light and heat) to target and remove sunspots and lesions, freckles, superficial capillaries, redness and the visible signs of ageing like blotchy pigment, as well as fine lines and wrinkles.
And all of this, with micro precision, leaves the surrounding normal skin unaffected and intact.
So, what do I mean by non-invasive?
No surgery or medical instruments are involved, and where there are no surgical incisions. For example, a medical x-ray or ultrasound is non-invasive. So too, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a non-invasive therapy for various skin conditions.
Skincare professionals often choose Intense Pulse Light to effectively treat the visual signs of sun damage and activate new collagen.
And who doesn’t want new collagen? I know I do.
# 2 Firming your neck with High-Intensity Focussed Ultrasound.
Often referred to as a non-surgical facelift. However, certainly not as extreme. If you’re reluctant to go to the drastic measure of a facelift, then a high-intensity focussed ultrasound (HIFU) could be the solution to your sagging neck.
I’ve long been a fan of low-frequency sonophoresis for its ability to improve the absorption of skincare ingredients for better results.
On the other hand, high-intensity focussed ultrasound is quite different as it works on the deeper layers of the skin to activate cellular functions to firm the skin. So although both use ultrasound technology, the depth and heat of the soundwaves differ with HIFU.
With HIFU, a delivery of intense ultrasound waves penetrate multiple layers of skin and body tissues without direct contact with the epidermis (the top layer of the skin).
Stabilised temperatures of 65~75°C are transferred to the targeted zones to improve skin where fat pads have developed, such as under the chin and have lost collagen and elastin, which leads to skin sagging in all the wrong places.
Sharpen and define your features.
Areas you might want to treat would be the pads of fat that accumulate under the chin or the jowls around the mouth and lower jawline, giving the appearance of sagging skin. HIFU can sharpen and define your features, giving you a more youthful appearance.
HIFU is an entirely non-invasive face-lifting and skin-tightening device that provides a customised procedure for the entire face, neck, and body.
#3 Improving your neck and décolletage with LED Light therapy.
Skin ageing results from a loss of cellular function, which external factors such as the sun can further accelerate.
Within every cell in the body are the mitochondria, which have essential roles in skin function. Mitochondrial damage accumulates with natural ageing skin cells, solar light and pollution.
Mitochondrial dysfunction slows cellular function and the formation of wrinkles, uneven pigmentation and decreased wound healing. Losing barrier function during skin ageing increases susceptibility to infection and affects wound healing (Source).
Evidence suggests that mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress are key features in all ageing tissue, including the skin.
LED Light Therapy enhances the cellular activities within the cell to power up the performance of the mitochondria to produce more ATP (cellular energy) to reduce inflammation and improve blood circulation.
LED Light is the catalyst for improved cell survival, increased proliferation and migration, and new protein (collagen and elastin) synthesis.
It’s exciting to think that LED Light therapy can positively affect the skin and be a useful anti ageing solution for the neck and décolletage.
